If you have ever been through depression, then you must know what a demon it can be for your soul. Yes, you can feel the aura that’s surrounding you to be dark, with no way out. While most of us are strong enough to get past this sickness, many of us struggle hard with it.

Like many of us, Rachna Malik, a housewife from Delhi went through her share of struggle with depression. Don’t worry, this is an inspiring story.

As a 50-year-old housewife, Rachna spent most of her days helping her husband and taking care of daughters. Additionally, she also took pills to keep her depression away. Even so, there were days when she felt nothing but unending sadness filling her days.

It was her daughter who helped her push through depressing days. But there were days when she couldn’t fight it and let it stay. Her daughter often pushed her out of her home to meet people, or do something. One day, Rachna listened to her daughter, and that changed everything.

Rachna soon found a passion in helping little children of an NGO. These children are terminally-ill and Rachna finds peace in helping them heal.  “It was my daughter who pushed me to get out of the house and do something. I had been cooped up inside for almost six months since I just didn’t want to meet anyone. I started working with an NGO for the blind and I saw that as a turning point in my life. I worked there as a volunteer for four years,” Rachna told her source.

She came to know about the NGO from her Gurudwara, where the volunteers would go to AIIMS to distribute food (langar) very week. She started accompanying them, and felt the pain of the children.

“I remember seeing the plight in which these families lived, and also remember seeing a girl die on the footpath. That changed me,” she told a source.

Rachna is working with the group since 2016 now, and has raised quite a good amount of money to help the terminally-ill children. Till date, she has helped around 150 children with the raised money.

“AIIMS provides free treatment for those who are Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holders. However, in working with the children I realized that the parents who brought their children here had absolutely nothing with them. And living and surviving in Delhi is not an easy task,” she added.

Her group is now called ‘Givers for a Cause' that provides financial and emotional relief to the families in need. However, it is not easy to see those kids fighting their diseases; some of them even leave this world.

She says that her work makes her happy and she does everything in her power to make her children smile, but it is hard to cope with the death of them as well. She has witnessed death of some of her children, and it’s definitely not easy.

“It is not easy what we do – there are days when I wait for my husband to leave the house in the morning only so that I can sit and cry,” she says.

In the middle of these heartbreaks, Rachna gets up every day to fight for her children. Her determination and passion to serve is laudable.

Rachna is a living example of the magic of giving. She stopped taking her depression pills within a year of working at the NGO. She started feeling healthy at every level. Way to go Rachna, we are proud of you!
