As the show is supposed to return in June, it might just be the final call in the dystopian anthology series.

Netflix took the entire Gen Y generation by shock when it first released its dystopian series, ‘Black Mirror’. Based on the idea how technology will make life different, ‘Black Mirror’ has helped us weigh the many pros and cons of our lives to come. Coming from creator Charlie Brooker, the series revolves around the idea how revolutionized technology would affect our day to day lives, our relationships, and the upcoming generation who will be born in a world where robots are a person’s best friend.

‘Black Mirror’ also came up with a standalone interactive movie, ‘Bandersnatch’, last year. A one of its kind the movie gave the audience the option to choose their own ending, and it turned out the film could have at least hundred endings in one seating.  Now ‘Black Mirror’ has finally returned with its fifth installment, and although it is rumored that the release of ‘Bandersnatch’ might have delayed the process of the fifth season, it can be said that the wait might just be worth it.

The series will tone down on its intensity. (IMDb)

As we await for yet another journey into the future to find out what more can happen, here’s all you need to know about the upcoming Season 5:

Release Date:

According to the first trailer, which was released earlier today, ‘Black Mirror’ will release on June 5.

Cast:

The cast is quite a surprising one, and the trailer gives us a pretty good idea about Miley Cyrus playing one of the protagonists. The last time Cyrus had appeared on the big screen was in the 2010 adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ titular novel, ‘The Last Song’. However, her brief appearance in the trailer where she can be seen sporting a pink wig and acting the role of what she does best- a celebrity pop star- Cyrus’ appearance has left fans with many questions.

Cyrus, who shot the episode in South Africa, and this was the time when her home with Liam Hemsworth was burned. At the time she had revealed to Vanity Fair that the incident helped connect further with her character on ‘Black Mirror’. She said, “ My character was having a panic attack, so needless to say the inspiration was there. Anne Sewitzky, the director, and I became very close, since going through all of this so far from home, she was really the only mother figure I had. Experiencing that together and in the realness of it all, we created something I think is magical.”

While Cyrus found her inspiration in a real-life incident, she will be joined by Andrew Scott who gives a pretty convincing performance- as shown on the trailer. Other than them, the cast of this season will include, Anthony Mackie, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Topher Grace, Damson Idris, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.

Creator:

According to Brooker, the fifth season will be slightly lighter in tone than the previous four. Although ever since ‘Black Mirror’ crossed the ocean from Channel 4 to Netflix, its undiminishing tendency to execute the futility of technology had already toned down quite a lot. However, Brooker promises that this season will be a mix of the nihilistic tone that the first season had started with and the lighter one that it gradually adopted.

In his interview with Radio Times he also remarked on the series’ tendency to not showcase political incidents that haven’t happened yet. “Last time I kept getting asked, ‘How do you do Black Mirror in a dystopian present?’ and I was saying, ‘Well I deliberately haven’t written an episode about Brexit, because you don’t know how that’s going to play out, so you’d have to wait and see, in a way.’” Moreover, Brooker also hinted at the presence of several Easter Eggs in this season which will perhaps directly link us to the earlier episodes.

Trailer:

The trailer is a neatly accumulated package of clippings from all the episodes together. Alongwith with giving some of the major stars such as Miley Cyrus, Andrew Scott and Anthony Mackie who will appear on the show, it also gives us a brief look into the tuned down hysteria of this season. Recap:

Season 4 gave up some episodes that were more contemporary, as compared to the preceding ones. ‘Black Museum’ was one such tale which followed a young girl as she sought revenge for the death of her father caused by a sadist who creates a museum out of criminological artefacts. It could have easily been a controversial one but its’ subtle reliance on human nature made it more relatable in approach.

It will be another retelling of what the future looks like. (IMDb)

Similarly, ‘Arkangel’ comes up with an unusual yet again relatable story of a mother who tries to protect her child from the ugliness of the world. This was yet another subtle way of executing parents’ tendencies to control their children up till a point where they no longer remain their kids, but run away into the ugliness of the world. The rest of the episodes such as ‘Hang the DJ’ and ‘USS Callister’ maintained a slightly romantic and comic tone, respectively.
