Important cases heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday, November 9:



- Justice D Y Chandrachud holds court as the Chief Justice of India for the first time after taking the oath.



- Newly sworn-in Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud began his first day in the office by garlanding the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the hallowed Supreme Court premises and with an assurance that serving people of the country is his "priority".



- SC deferred to November 24 the hearing on a batch of pleas challenging the Centre's 2016 decision to demonetise currency notes of denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.



- SC asked National Investigation Agency (NIA) to inform it what kind of restrictions it wanted for activist Gautam Navlakha, who is incarcerated in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Maoist link case if he is placed under house arrest.



- SC directed the Election Commission not to issue till November 10 the notification for the assembly bypoll in Rampur Sadar in Uttar Pradesh, which fell vacant following the disqualification of Samajwadi Party MLA Azam Khan after his conviction in a hate speech case.



- SC said the "popular" sport needs to be taken forward and asked people to give suggestions to the amicus curiae on the draft constitution for the All India Football Federation, saying "we are doing anything except football."

- SC dismissed a PIL challenging the nomination of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi to Rajya Sabha by the government on the ground that he was not eligible.



- SC pulled up the Agra Development Authority for not conducting any survey on the environmental impact of business activities near the iconic Taj Mahal and termed it a "sorry state of affairs".



- SC said that it needs to see whether any further directions are required to be issued on the report filed by Justice HS Bedi Committee, which had investigated several cases of alleged fake encounter in Gujarat from 2002 to 2006.
